It’s about to become a much more Googly, Goggly, Augmented Oggling world. Google Glasses might seem like they’ve come out if nowhere but this Augmented Reality eyewear has been in development for over a year now, with working prototypes.
The concept is simple. Bring the most commonly used smartphone features out of your pocket and bring them right onto your face. Video calls, Status updates, Snap shots and more just a blink away.
“We believe technology should work for you — to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t”. says Google on their Official ‘Project Glass’ Google+ page.
“A group of us from Google[x] started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment. We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input. So we took a few design photos to show what this technology could look like and created a video to demonstrate what it might enable you to do.”
The question is, how will people respond? Comments on the Google+ Page range from Carlos Ochoa – “Is this another April fools joke? You’re a few days late. I’m very concerned about the long term effects, both social and corporeal.” to “Renaud Lepage – SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY”.
The technology behind the Google Glasses remains in the dark but can be assumed that these glasses would need to be tethered with an Android smartphone, perhaps by Bluetooth 4.0. This would not only give Google a leg up in the Smartphone race but would open the door for other Android accessories. Dick Tracy watch anyone?
