Although Flash could technically run quite well on all three generations of the iPad and the latest generation of iPhones & iPod Touch, the refusal for Apple to open up their platform for Adobe’s Flash and the incredible success of the iPad has pushed Adobe into a corner.
If this isn’t the planned exit Adobe has created from Flash, they are certainly bracing themselves for a shift and with Edge they now have a chance to create a development tool that could become the defacto tool for Web Animations as they recently had with Flash.
The one thing that Adobe won’t have is a full proprietary license to the Code that makes up the standards as these are open web standards and anyone could create developer tools to compete with Edge.
Much of the same features you would expect in Adobe’s Flash development tools you’ll find in Edge such as the use of Timelines, Tweens, Key frames, etc. Adobe has recently released a Preview Version available to download now (Preview 5 Now Available).
Watch as Doug Winnie, Principal Product Manager for Adobe Edge, takes you through the basics of what Edge can do in Preview 1.
