It’s starting to feel like the wait is over. After being “Pysched-out” by a text books announcement where we expecting an iPad 3 announcement based on previous year’s announcements, the next generation iPad’s components are starting to surface at a rapid rate.
According to All Things D there will be an Apple announcement in the first week March followed by a release in late March.
Here is a Video from Slate, quick summary of the rumors plus updates on the Shenzhen labor controversies.
Here are the most likely features we can expect from leaked Chinese supplier photos and tidbits:
High Resolution “Retina” Display
New 2048 x 1536 pixel – it is expected that most Apple displays will make the leap to their “Retina” standard as Apple is increasing the dpi specs of Application icons across the board on bot iOS & OSX platforms.
New A6 Processor (w/ Siri?)
It was the processor on the iPhone 4S that enabled it to take advantage of the latest voice technologies because the processor has a sophisticated language processor built right into the chip. It is quite possible that the new chip on the iPad 3 would also carry along the language processing capabilities and could be a huge distinguishing feature from the iPad 2 to the iPad 3.
By far the largest complaint has been the poor quality back camera. Although you shouldn’t expect an iPhone 4S quality camera, do expect something similar to being on par with the iPhone 4. Leaked images of components do indicate a new or at least different camera. Apple could fit any camera the wanted to in the iPad but will not want to eat into the market share of the 4S as the camera is a secondary feature of the iPad compared to a primary feature of the iPhone.
It is expected that there will be a 128GB option for people willing to pay a little more to store pictures, videos and files.
Other Feature Speculation:
NFC (Near Field Communication) Chip for Mobile payments and virtual wallet capabilities.
